Friday Face off: As Old As the Hills?

The Friday Face off is a weekly meme hosted by Books by Proxy and the official rules can be found here.  This is a fun way to feature your favorite book covers and show off your favorite edition!

As old as the hills?? – A cover with mountains

This week’s pick is The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien.

The Winner Is:

This was a difficult choice because so many of these covers are really wonderful, but in the end I picked the two I would like to hang on my wall. I like the darkness and the minimal use of color of the 75th anniversary edition, but the intricacy of the cover on the right is gorgeous as well! Plus, they’ve got lots of mountain which is perfect for this week’s theme (I almost decided to rename it “The Mountains are Calling and I Must Go”). There are 915 editions listed on Goodreads, so which is your favorite?

If you want to join in next week, the theme is:

2nd December – Oranges and lemons say the bells of St Clements – A cover with fruit.

  1. There was a 25th or 50th anniversary edition [of both the hobbit and the LotR] that was this faux colored leather with serious gold leaf lettering. The Hobbit had green leather, almost a leaf green, and while it sounds hideous, it actually worked really well. No picture. Just a leather tome with gold lettering. It looked fantastic sitting on a shelf 🙂
